OIFF-2025: the program of the second day includes retrospectives, competition screenings and master classes

The 16th Odesa International Film Festival lasts in Kyiv. The second day of the festival presented a rich program: from retrospective screenings of world classics to modern competition premieres and special events.

The day began with the film "Peppermint Frappé" from the Carlos Saura retrospective. After that, the Festival of Festivals program featured the screening of the film “On the Edge” by directors Geren Van de Vorst and Sophie Musel, and the Focus on Poland section featured the film “Anxiety” by Sławomir Fabicki.

The special screenings program featured the film “Call Sign “Artist,” after which the film’s protagonist, Oleksandr Pecherytsia, shared his personal impressions of the process of working on the film: “This film is our joint reflection. It shows the transformation of human thought, its desires, its challenges. We wanted to document it all.”

The Saura program continued with the musical film “Fados”, and in the Family Values: Children section, the audience saw “My Everything” by Anne-Sophie Bailly. An important event of the second day was the premiere of “Dovzhenko. Full of Compromise” by Igor Ivanko in the “Gala Premieres” program. Creative producer Volodymyr Tykhyi noted that Oleksandr Dovzhenko was a truly outstanding personality of his time: “How to treat Dovzhenko? As a brilliant artist. He showed himself exactly like that. But the problem for each of us is that a person is broader than just the concept of “artist””.

The Wim Wenders retrospective presented three films at once: “The Same Player Shoots Again”, “Return to the Silver City” and “Number 666”. The European competition continued the day with a screening of the film “Paul and Paulette Take a Bath” by Jethro Massey.

In the “Art of Trauma” program, the audience watched “Kyiv Soloists” by Trond Kvig Andreassen. Film critic Oksana Volosheniuk shared her expert opinion about the film: "I watch dozens of films that begin on the first day of the war. There are many similar ones among them, but this film is one of the few films where you feel not disheveledness, but collectedness."

Also included in the program "The Art of Trauma" was the film "Match in a Haystack" by Joe Gill. As part of the "Festival of Ukrainian Festivals", a screening of the film "Queens of Joy" by Olga Gibelinda was held. The film's producer Ivanna Khitsinska was also present at the screening, and noted: "We wanted to show that we are all equal. We live with the same desires, actions, and experiences. We all have the same war. And that we need to love and support each other. It seems to me that we caught some kind of vibe of goodness in the film."

The “Gala Premieres” were supplemented with the film “The Party’s Over!” by Antoni Cordier, whose world premiere took place as part of the Cannes Film Festival’s Directors’ Fortnight: “This film is about class inequality, the desire to get what’s yours. And I’m sure that this first film by Antoni, in which he plunged into satire, will bring us pleasure,” said Inna Gordeeva, a member of the Film Critics’ Union, before watching the film.

The film program of the second day was completed by Lesya Dyak’s film “Dad’s Lullaby,” which entered the National Documentary Competition.

In addition to film screenings, the festival day included educational and creative events. A master class was held “Mediatheque of the Public: The Largest Media Archive of Ukraine: What, Who, For What, How?” During the informative discussion, the head of the media library, Taisiya Turchyn, said: “The archive of the Public has video materials of Ukrainian television from the 50s to the present day. Speaking of Ukrainian television, we also mean television and radio studios. If we talk about the audio library of Ukrainian radio, then the oldest recordings contained there date back to the 20s, because it was then that Ukrainian radio was founded in Kharkiv.”
