Petzold’s awards include a Silver Bear of the 62nd Berlin Film Festival for Best Director (“Barbara”). Twice his films were awarded with the FIPRESCI prize – at Berlinale in 2003 (“Wolfsburg”), at the San Sebastian Film Festival in 2014 (“Phoenix”).

Petzold’s films were nominated for main prizes of different prestigious film festivals: nominations for Best Film in the main competition at the Berlin International Film Festival (“Ghosts” in 2005, “Yella” in 2007, “Barbara” in 2012), a nomination for Best Film in the main competition at the 65th Venice Film Festival, a nomination for the European Film Academy award for Best Film (“Barbara” in 2012). His film “Phoenix” was in the running for the main award of the 62nd San Sebastian Film Festival.

The holder of the Lola Award by the German Film Academy works in the style of new realism, pays special attention to details and strives to present reality as it is. There are elements of suspense and mysticism in Petzold’s movies. Hartmut Bitomsky and Harun Farocki, renowned documentalists, were among Christian’s mentors.
