The film tells the story of events that took place in southern Ukraine in the 1920s, events that were long erased from Soviet history. It marks the beginning of the expropriation and the Great Terror of Ukraine by the Bolsheviks before the first wave of the Holodomor. Ten-year-old Anton and his friend Yasha, a Christian and a Jew, unwittingly become witnesses to significant historical events. Before their eyes, an armed uprising of peasants against the Bolsheviks unfolds, led by Lev Trotsky, bringing hunger and death to peaceful villages, destroying everything in their path. However, the children perceive the events around them as an intriguing game, and their friendship remains unbroken by either the red chimera of the Russian Revolution or the entire bloody 20th century...

DIRECTOR - ZAZA URUSHADZE

Biography

Zaza Urushadze (October 1965, Tbilisi – December 7, 2019) was a Georgian film director, producer, and screenwriter, as well as a state figure in the field of cinematography. From 1982 to 1988, he studied at the directing faculty of the Tbilisi Theatre and Film University. In 2001, he was the head of the Expert Commission of the Georgian National Film Center, and from 2002 to 2004, he served as the director of the GNFC.

His last and most successful work was the film "Tangerines" (2013). The film was nominated for an Oscar in 2015 by Estonia in the category of Best Foreign Language Film. Overall, "Tangerines" received more than 15 awards at international festivals.
