The film, based on Vasyl Barka's novella "The Yellow Prince," tells the story of events in Ukraine in 1932-33, when a wave of famine, artificially provoked by the Soviet authorities, swept through the central and eastern parts of the country. The new regime took away the last grain and livestock from Ukrainian peasants, searched houses, and emptied hiding places. In despair, people fled to the cities, trying to find at least some food. Ukrainian villages were dying out. At the center of the film's events is a peasant family experiencing a terrible tragedy: the first "hunger" loss of their loved ones...

Biography

Oles Yanchuk is a Ukrainian film director, producer, and People's Artist of Ukraine. He was born on September 29, 1956. In 1984, he graduated from the directing faculty of the Kyiv State Institute of Theatrical Arts named after I. K. Karpenko-Kary, with his diploma work being the film "An Incident in the Restaurant" based on a story by V. Shukshin. He began his creative career as an assistant director at the Oleksandr Dovzhenko Film Studio.

A pivotal and defining stage in Oles Yanchuk's career is the film "Famine '33," his first feature-length work. The film was fundamentally shot with public funding, with contributions not only from residents of Ukraine but also from compatriots in the USA and Canada. The film received the Grand Prix at the First All-Ukrainian Film Festival (1991). It was aired several times on Polish and Australian television. From 1992 to 1998, it was shown at many international film festivals in North America and Europe. In 2009, it was awarded the first Henri Langlois Prize (European nomination) at the International Festival of Cinematic Heritage in Paris, France.
