DIRECTOR - JACQUES RIVETTE

Biography

Jacques Rivette (1928-2016) was a French film director and film critic, one of the founders of the "New Wave" movement in French cinema. He began his career as a critic and theorist of the "New Wave," contributing to journals. Rivette worked as an assistant to J. Becker and J. Renoir, and was notably influenced by the experimental theories of Jean Rouch. He made several short films, and in 1961 directed his first feature film "Paris Belongs to Us."

Jacques Rivette was one of the few directors who continued to uphold the principles of the New Wave, advocating and producing auteur cinema. His films, by commercial standards, are exceptionally long and plotless, almost entirely improvisational. Overall, Jacques Rivette's filmography includes 32 directed films.
