The wedding of a groom from the Cracow intelligentsia and a bride from the peasantry leads to a meeting of both groups in a country cottage. They enjoy their time together. Interestingly enough, the guests are joined by ghosts.

Biography

Andrzej Witold Wajda (1926–2016) was a Polish film director and screenwriter who worked as an artist in his youth. During the 1989/1990 season, he was artistic director of the Powieczny Theatre in Warsaw. His films were nominated four times for an Oscar for Best International Feature Film. He is the only Polish director to have won an Oscar.

Wajda gained popularity through films initiated by the so-called Polish Film School: The Sewer (1957) and Ashes and Diamonds (1958), in which he depicted the period of the Second World War. He created a cinema of moral unease, making films that addressed social issues and exposed the pathologies of the communist system in Polish cinema: Man of Marble (1977) and its sequel Man of Iron (1981), which was awarded the Palme d’Or at the 34th Cannes Film Festival in 1981. He has received numerous awards for his contribution to the development of cinema; in 2000, he was awarded an Oscar for his outstanding achievements in cinematography. For his lifetime achievements, he has also been honoured with the Honorary Golden Bear, the César Award and the Honorary Golden Lion.
