DIRECTOR - TONY GATLIF

Biography
Tony Gatlif (born Michel or Boualem Dahmani) was born in 1948 in Algeria to a Berber father and an Andalusian Romani mother. In the early 1960s he moved to France, where he first worked in theater before turning to cinema: in 1975 his debut film La Tête en ruine was released.
He gained true recognition with films that explored Romani culture. His works Corre Gitano (1981), Les Princes (1982), and later Latcho Drom (1993) and Gadjo Dilo (1997) became important milestones in European cinema, as they combined a realistic depiction of Romani life with music as the central bearer of culture. Latcho Drom was honored in the “Un Certain Regard” program at the Cannes Film Festival. In 2004 Gatlif received the Best Director Award at the Cannes Film Festival for his film Exils.
A distinctive feature of Tony Gatlif’s work is that he often writes the scripts himself and composes the music for his films. His films consistently return to the themes of identity, exile, freedom, and music as a universal language. The fusion of personal experience with an authentic vision of Romani culture has made him one of the most original filmmakers in contemporary Europe.
