Wim Wenders made this film together with graduates of the University of Television and Film Munich. It shows the beginnings of cinema in Berlin where the brothers Skladanowsky built a projector, the bioscope, at the same time as the Lumière brothers in France and Edison in America.

The German journalist Phillip Winter wants to write a story about America, but is unable to accomplish anything but a series of Polaroids before disappointedly beginning his journey back home.

Kings Of The Road is about a friendship between two men: Bruno, aka “King of the Road”, who repairs film projectors and travels along the inner-German border in his truck, and the psychologist Robert, aka “Kamikaze”, who is fleeing from his own past.

The story starts with a postcard and a cryptic message: “Dear Phil. I cannot continue m.o.s.! S.O.S.! Come to Lisbon with all your stuff, a.s.a.p.! Big hug, Fritz.” Who is who? And what do all those abbreviations mean?

There was a general gloom at the 1982 Cannes Film Festival. The feeling that the end of cinema was inevitable was roaming everywhere. A ‘black hole’ was opening in film history, so to say. The goalkeeper Josef Bloch is sent off after committing a foul during an away game. This causes him to completely lose his bearings. He wanders aimlessly through the unfamiliar town, spends the night with the box-office attendant of a movie theater, and strangles her the next morning.
