Young but experienced Ana arrives at a secluded country estate in the arid region of Castile, near Madrid, to work as a governess for three girls. There she discovers a dysfunctional family: the matriarch – the ailing old, obsessed with death and constant nervous breakdowns; her son José, who was raised in girls’ clothes until his First Communion and is now fixated on military uniforms and paraphernalia; Juan, the father of the three girls, a pervert since childhood, writes Ana pornographic letters; his wife Luchy has suicidal tendencies; and Fernando, a mystical and religious recluse, who as a child was subjected to flagellation, lives as a hermit in a cave. Ana’s presence disrupts the fragile balance of the household so deeply that the brothers force her to give in to their advances, leading to tragic consequences.
