In 1996, Ukraine purchased the British Faraday Antarctic Station for just £1, enabling the country’s return to polar exploration. In 2022, 21-year-old Volodymyr Khomko, along with a team of other scientists, embarked on the groundbreaking 27th Antarctic Ukrainian Expedition, set against the backdrop of the devastating Russian invasion. Through Volodymyr’s eyes, we follow the harrowing journeys of fourteen Ukrainian scientists as they grapple with the personal impact of war and the absolute isolation of the station. However, the more crucial question is, what will they do after the expedition?
