Josef travels through the surreal world of a small Jewish town in search of his dead father. In the sanatorium to which he arrives on a dilapidated train, time behaves strangely, reanimating the past. The journey in the film has no logical transitions and often develops in an absurd way. Along the way, Josef meets a boy with a postage stamp album, soldiers who arrest him for having forbidden dreams, a group of living mannequins, and a blind conductor who is the personification of death.
